There are great colleges and universities located all over the country, so the first thing you need to do to narrow down your search is decide where you would like to go to school. Is there a state that you have always wanted to live in? Do you want to stay closer to home? You may even consider finding a couple of colleges that are both closer to home or further away depending on what you are looking for.

Another thing you will want to consider is the surrounding area of the college or university. Some colleges may be located in very urban areas where there is never a shortage of activities. On the other hand, you may find some good schools that are in more rural areas.

Check out Available Majors and Minors

Once you have an idea of the location of your dream school, you can narrow down the selection by looking at the majors and minors available for each school. Even if you don’t have a set major or minor in mind, you will still want to see if the school offers degrees that you would be interested in. You will also want to see if the school offers a program for people who are undecided.

You will find that some schools offer a wide selection of majors and minors, while other schools may have a very narrow focus on the types of classes and degrees that are available. It’s important to trust your instincts. If you’re not decided on a major but the school doesn’t offer any options that are of interest to you, then it might be best to consider another school.

School Size/Atmosphere

Another important factor to consider is the atmosphere and the size of the school. Larger schools typically have a lot to offer their students in the way of activities, facilities, and academics. Medium to small schools, on the other hand, offer smaller class sizes and a more close-knit feel. You get to be the one who decides what kind of atmosphere you are looking for. Do you want to have the opportunity to meet a lot of new people? Does the idea of your teachers knowing you by name seem appealing? Small, medium, and large schools all have their advantages and drawbacks. In the end, the size of the school depends on what you want.

As you begin your college search, it’s important to keep in mind that whatever place you choose could be your home for the next four years. While you will probably still go home on breaks and for the occasional weekend, for the most part, you will be living at school. For this reason, you want to be sure that you can be comfortable. As you do your research on potential schools, look to see if they say anything about parking, safety, food options, and any other services that will make your stay more comfortable. It may be beneficial to make a list of some of the things that are most important to you when it comes to being comfortable.

Last, but certainly not least, is the cost of tuition. Cost is probably one of the most important things to consider as you look for a college. Not only is it important to consider the cost of your tuition, it’s also a good idea to look into whether or not the school offer financial aid or has scholarships available.

These are just a few things you should consider as you begin your college search. If you’re still having trouble finding the perfect school for you, Delehey College Consulting can help!
